The Good Behind
The Cavern
FAMILY-OWNED SINCE 1941
The Cavern is a third-generation, family-run resort that first opened its doors in 1941. Nestled in the Northern Drakensberg, it has grown into a beloved destination known for its warmth, hospitality, and deep connection to the land and its people. Guests return year after year, not just for the scenery, but for the sense of belonging that defines every part of the experience.
ROOTED IN COMMUNITY
The Cavern is located near the amaZizi village and has long been committed to uplifting the surrounding community. From creating local jobs to supporting education and skills development, their approach to business puts people first, with long-term impact in mind.
FOUNDER OF ROYAL DRAKENSBERG PRIMARY SCHOOL
The Cavern established Royal Drakensberg Primary in 2007 to provide quality early childhood education to children in the area. It remains a core part of their purpose, helping build strong foundations for brighter futures, right at the foot of the mountains.
EMPLOYMENT & SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
Many of The Cavern’s staff come from nearby communities and stay with the resort for years, even decades. The team receives training, support, and opportunities to develop skills in hospitality, guiding, gardening, and more.
ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
Caring for the land is part of daily life at The Cavern. From alien vegetation clearing to recycling initiatives, their goal is to preserve the natural beauty of the Northern Drakensberg and tread lightly in all they do.
A PLACE WITH PURPOSE
The Cavern believes tourism can be a force for good, creating shared value for guests, staff, and the broader community. Whether you're walking their mountain paths or sharing a meal in the dining room, you’re part of something meaningful.
